Wikipedia says that “CHEHRE” is the story about a man who has to deal with retired lawyers. Rumy Jafry directed the film. Emraan Hashmi and Amitabh Bachchan play the lead roles. The film will be released theatrically on August 27, 2021.
Monika Rawal Kukreja, a reporter for Hindustan Times, said that “Chehre” is a thrilling thriller that never fails to thrill. Although it’s beautifully shot, the twists are often predictable. Chehre is not a riveting courtroom drama. Let’s just say Rumi Jafry tried something new, but his film is only watchable.
A Times of India reporter stated in a review, “Chehre seeks to make a social comment on the state of Indian criminal justice.” Although the idea is intriguing at first, it ends there. It turns out that the film is a courtroom drama that lasts longer than any longest-running suit.

Chehre movie review:
Poor writing is one of the worst ways to ruin a captivating premise. Rumi Jafry’s Chehre manages to do just that. The film starts out promisingly but quickly begins to fall apart. Chehre is so strange after a point that even the most experienced actors, such as Anu Kapoor, Emraan Hadhmi and Amitabh Chand, aren’t able lift the script. Everything may have appeared perfect on paper but it doesn’t translate well on screen.
Sameer Mehra (Emraan hashmi), chief of Delhi’s ad agency, gets stranded during a hailstorm. Four former court officials invite him to spend the night at their haunted bungalow on a hill station. It is not known that Sameer Mehra and four other retired court officials are able to enact mock trials on strangers as a pastime. They’ve also found their latest guineapig. He reluctantly agrees to their twisted “game” but he continues to resist.
Amitabh Bachchan is the eccentric public prosecutor Lateef Zaidi, Annu Kapoor the funnily serious defence lawyer Paramjeet Singh Bhuller, Dhritiman Chatterjee as the straight-faced judge Justice Jagdish Acharya, and Raghubir Yadav plays the ever-excited prosecutor Hariya Jatav. The four men together create a lot and deliver high-pitched words, but it all ends up in major turbulence.
This court of justice, which they affectionately call’real’, does not have an ‘insaaf but a faisla. It is a place where there is neither justice nor judgment. The buildup to Sameer’s murder trial lasts almost 20 minutes.
Chehre is a thriller that doesn’t disappoint. It is engrossingly filmed, but the twists, at points, are so predictable. Ranjit Kapoor’s story comes across as unusual on several occasions. But it quickly loses its excitement just as it is looking exciting. You wish that more thought was given to the editing. Maybe then, it could have been a crisper timepiece.
Rumi and Ranjit have co-written the dialogues. Rumi is so heavy-handed that it causes them to feel heavier than their weight. There is also a lot more’shayari’, but Hindi literature lectures are only enjoyable to a limited extent. Sometimes, though, one-liners can make you laugh.
Here is the monologue of Amitabh, which lasts approximately seven minutes. Without getting to the point, he covers everything, from the Nirbhaya Rape Case and the plights acid attack victims to Uri surgery strikes and Indo Pakistan tensions. He’s clearly filibustering. This is a great idea, but it has serious execution problems. The monologue of Kartik Aaryan from Pyaar Ka punchnama is a better alternative than this preachiness.
Amitabh and Emraan’s face off sequences are great. Annu Kapoor gives it a Punjabi accent, which is a nice touch. Rhea Chkraborty (Anna), a mysterious house helper and painter, spends too much time portraying a half-baked character who doesn’t let them do much. Siddhanth Kaput (Joe), who is unable to speak, is another example. Krystle DiSouza (Natasha Oswal), is impressive in her debut big-screen appearance. Samir Soni as Emraan’s boss is also onscreen, but his overacting is easy to ignore.
Chehre doesn’t qualify as a compelling courtroom drama. Let’s just be clear: Rumi Jafry is not a skilled filmmaker, but the film is watchable.
